Wichita State University police arrested an 18-year-old student on suspicion of rape after a sexual assault was reported on campus Sunday, Oct. 11.
The student was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Monday, Oct. 12, at about 10 a.m. on suspicion of rape and aggravated domestic battery, as reported by The Sunflower, WSU's student newspaper. Jail records identified the suspect as a current WSU student. KWCH and KAKE confirmed the booking details from jail records.
No bond was listed.
The Wichita State University Police Department, the campus law enforcement agency, handled the arrest. The university confirmed the sexual assault report led to the booking but declined to release additional details, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation.
Lainie Mazzullo-Hart, WSU's director of strategic communications, said in a written statement that there is no threat to the campus community. She added that the university takes all reports of sexual assault seriously and is following applicable laws, reporting and support processes.
WSU has not disclosed where on campus the assault allegedly occurred. No source has described the nature of the relationship between the suspect and the alleged victim. The aggravated domestic battery suspected offense is defined under Kansas law as knowingly causing bodily harm to a household member or someone in a dating relationship.
No court date or arraignment has been announced. The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office has not publicly commented on the case.
The arrest comes less than a week after a separate WSU campus sexual assault case reached sentencing. Former graduate student Md. Barkat Mia received nearly 13 years in prison on Wednesday, Oct. 7, for a 2024 rape that occurred in a campus lab. That case is unrelated to the new arrest.
Students seeking support can contact WSU's Counseling and Psychological Services, known as CAPS, at 316-978-4792, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CAPS is located in the Student Wellness Center and provides services related to sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Students can also report criminal conduct or misconduct through WSU's online portal at wichita.edu/reportit.
