The University of Kansas logo went up on the Wichita Biomedical Campus building on Aug. 16, joining Wichita State University's name already on the eight-story structure at William and Broadway in downtown Wichita.
KWCH reported that crews attached the KU logo to the building, completing the dual signage for the joint venture between the two universities. The 350,000-square-foot facility aims to address Kansas's healthcare workforce shortage by housing medical education, research and patient care under one roof.
The campus sign with WSU branding went up around Aug. 14, when the Wichita Biomedical Campus's official X account posted that the sign was installed, tagging both universities. Wichita State's account followed with a post calling the project transformational and saying it will create more opportunities for students and strengthen healthcare in the community. The KU logo was added two days later.
Construction is on schedule. The building is on track for completion by mid-January 2027, according to The Sunflower. Faculty and staff will move in after spring 2027 graduation, with some classes beginning in summer 2027 and the majority of instruction starting in fall 2027.
The fifth floor will be shared by both WSU and KU programs. The building includes simulation rooms, lab spaces and meeting areas where instructors and fellow students can observe work and debrief together.
"The idea is to create a really active and interesting space for students to feel a part of the community," Emily Patterson, WSU's director of facilities planning, said in an Aug. 13 interview with The Sunflower about the campus design.
The campus sits within a broader healthcare corridor strategy in downtown Wichita, with nearby access to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital. WSU named Jason Ladner as director of industry engagement and health innovation, a role in which he will work with Provost Monica Lounsbery to create the National Institute of Health Solutions and Innovation connecting the university with local health professionals.
WSU is also eyeing expansion. The WSU Board of Trustees approved $750,000 in August 2025 for a feasibility study on a proposed dental school near the biomedical campus, with results expected by fall 2026. Patterson told The Sunflower that the building's third floor was designed with a potential bridge connection to a future dental school building.
The Wichita Ledger will follow up when the campus opens in spring 2027.
