Former Wichita Eisenhower quarterback Derek Morgan threw three touchdowns Saturday, Oct. 3, leading No. 6 Lehigh to a 34-0 victory over Fordham. The win extended the Mountain Hawks' regular-season winning streak to 23 games.
Morgan, a sophomore, completed 10 of 20 passes for a career-high 152 yards without an interception. All three scoring strikes came during a 31-point second quarter that broke open a scoreless game, the Wichita Eagle first reported.
His teammates had voted him game captain for the first time this season before kickoff, according to The Brown and White, Lehigh's student newspaper. Morgan told The Morning Call the honor mattered: "It definitely meant a lot that my brothers trusted me to be the captain today, and I think that definitely helped my performance just knowing I had the trust of my team."
Morgan capped a 98-yard drive with a 30-yard scoring pass to Anthony Feaster. He later found tight end Aiden Schomp for a 10-yard score, then hit Feaster again from 29 yards out after a Fordham turnover.
Morgan entered the season with one career appearance and zero pass attempts. His chance came Sept. 12 against William & Mary, when starter Hayden Johnson left with an injury early in the second quarter. Morgan entered and turned his first collegiate pass attempt into a 22-yard touchdown to Nick Palumbo, finishing 3 of 4 for 36 yards with 72 rushing yards in a 44-20 win.
A week later, Morgan made his first start against Dartmouth and completed 10 of 13 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in a 24-20 victory. At Penn, Morgan completed six passes for 49 yards but produced both Lehigh touchdowns in a 20-7 win.
Through four games of significant action, Morgan has completed 29 of 52 passes for 310 yards with six touchdowns, zero interceptions and two rushing touchdowns. Lehigh is 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Patriot League play, ranked No. 6 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
At Eisenhower, Morgan helped the Tigers reach the Class 5A semifinals as a junior and earned Wichita Eagle Top 33 honors as a senior. Lehigh head coach Rich Nagy told The Morning Call the team's complementary play has fueled the streak, with the defense forcing five turnovers and holding Fordham to 42 rushing yards while senior running back Luke Yoder piled up 171 yards on the ground.
Lehigh enters a bye week before traveling to Cornell on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.
