Andover and Derby both reached 5-0 on Friday, Oct. 2, headlining a Week 5 slate that saw lopsided results across the City League and AVCTL divisions.
The Trojans celebrated homecoming with a 26-7 win over Eisenhower in AVCTL Division II play. Andover's defense set the tone on the game's first snap. Senior Leland Schumacher intercepted a deep pass to give the offense early field position, according to Catch it Kansas.
Quarterback Will Quinn turned that takeaway into points, scoring on a one-yard run. Quinn finished with three touchdowns. After a scoreless first quarter, Andover took a 13-7 lead into halftime and shut out the Tigers in the second half.
The 5-0 start is Andover's best since 2013, KAKE reported.
"I think our defense played really well," Andover coach Jamie Cruce said after the game, according to Catch it Kansas.
In AVCTL Division I, Derby ground out a 34-13 win over Maize South to stay unbeaten. Da'Von Morrison rushed for two touchdowns while filling in for injured starter Arieus Finley, the Derby Informer reported. Quarterback Blade Clark threw a touchdown pass to Michael Castillo and rushed for two scores, though he also threw two interceptions.
Panthers coach Brandon Clark said the team lacked its usual energy. Maize South's Reign Illian connected on touchdown passes of 47 and 78 yards to Stratten Ebers and Grayson Strelow, keeping the Mavericks in the game into the second half.
In City League action, Kapaun Mt. Carmel routed Wichita South 56-7 to stay unbeaten. Ken Huff found the end zone twice, and quarterback Cole Rapp threw a touchdown pass to Ethan Burr. Kapaun has scored at least 49 points in every game this season.
Wichita Northwest blanked Wichita Heights 38-0. Freshman running back Braylon Scott has emerged as one of the Grizzlies' breakout players this season, according to the Wichita Eagle.
The rest of the City League saw blowouts across the board. Bishop Carroll shut out Wichita West 61-0. Wichita Southeast routed Wichita North 70-0. Hays beat Wichita East 28-7.
In other AVCTL action, Maize topped Hutchinson 45-7 in Division I, and Andover Central beat Goddard 17-8 in Division II.
