Wichita drivers on Kellogg Avenue will lose lanes in both directions starting Monday, Oct. 5. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is beginning a $5.11 million bridge replacement west of Interstate 235.

The project will rebuild the bridge where Kellogg, also known as U.S. Highway 54, crosses the M.S. Mitch Mitchell Floodway between I-235 and Hoover Road. Construction is expected to continue through August 2028, according to KSN-TV, which first reported the project.

KDOT said traffic in each direction will be reduced to two lanes. The outside lanes will close first. The agency did not specify whether both directions will narrow at the same time or in phases.

The ramp from eastbound Kellogg to northbound I-235 will close for the duration of construction. KDOT is directing those drivers to take southbound I-235 instead, then loop back north using the K-42 interchange.

The bridge spans the Wichita-Valley Center Floodway, known locally as the 'Big Ditch.'" renamed by Congress in 2018 to honor M.S. "Mitch" Mitchell, who served as flood control maintenance supervisor from 1958 to 1963 and as superintendent from 1964 to 1979.

The project adds to an already busy stretch of road work along the Kellogg corridor. According to KDOT's Wichita Metro Updates page, two other major projects are underway nearby: the I-135/U.S. 54 interchange bridge construction, expected to run through September 2027, and the $288 million East Kellogg Expansion Project, a multi-year effort to widen U.S. 54 to six lanes east of the city.

KDOT has not published a dedicated project page or press release for the bridge replacement. The agency's Wichita Metro Updates page, last updated Sept. 22, did not yet include the project.
