Former Wichita State third baseman Alec Bohm hit a go-ahead solo home run in the 10th inning Wednesday, Sept. 30. The blast lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series.
Bohm's homer kept Philadelphia's season alive and evened the best-of-three series at one game apiece.
Atlanta reliever Didier Fuentes fired a 99 mph fastball on the inside part of the plate with two outs in the 10th. Bohm kept his hands inside the pitch and drove it 357 feet the opposite way, clearing the right-field fence at Truist Park in Atlanta, the Wichita Eagle reported. It was just his second opposite-field homer of the season.
"I didn't know it was gone until I heard it hit -- kind of rattle against the fence above the wall," Bohm said after the game, according to MLB.com.
The homer was the third of Bohm's postseason career. He became the fourth player in Phillies history to hit a go-ahead extra-inning homer in the postseason, joining George Vukovich in 1981, Lenny Dykstra in 1993 and J.T. Realmuto in Game 1 of the 2022 World Series, according to MLB.com.
Philadelphia trailed 3-1 heading into the eighth inning, six outs from elimination. Kyle Schwarber homered, and Bryce Harper followed with a game-tying shot to force extra innings, the Associated Press reported. Rookie Andrew Painter then threw three scoreless innings of relief to close it out.
The game ended on a first-of-its-kind moment. Realmuto challenged a ball call on an 0-2 pitch to Dominic Smith. The automated system ruled it a strike, ending the game. It was the first game-ending ABS challenge in postseason history.
Bohm, 30, starred at Wichita State from 2016 to 2018. His junior season, he batted .339 with 16 home runs and 55 RBIs before Philadelphia selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. His first postseason homer came in Game 3 of the 2022 World Series against Houston, a blast off Lance McCullers Jr. that was the 1,000th home run in World Series history. The bat he used was sent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Bohm finished the 2026 regular season batting .248 with 15 home runs and 82 RBIs in 143 games. He has faced criticism during a rocky year and is heading into free agency. After Wednesday's win, Bohm told the AP he was trying not to think about his impending free agency.
"I really don't want the season to end," he said.
In Game 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 29, Bohm drove in Philadelphia's first run of the series with an RBI double against Atlanta ace Chris Sale. The Braves won that game 5-3 after Austin Riley hit a three-run homer in the eighth.
The decisive Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1, in Atlanta. Braves right-hander Grant Holmes (10-6, 3.44 ERA) is the probable starter against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola (7-12, 4.67 ERA).
