Wichita State men's basketball picked up its first 2027 recruit Monday when combo guard Damon Miles verbally committed to the Shockers.

Miles, a 6-foot-2 junior at Clear Lake High School in Houston, announced his decision Sept. 28 after completing an official visit to Wichita the previous weekend, as first reported by the Wichita Eagle. He chose the Shockers over fellow finalists New Orleans and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The commitment gives fourth-year head coach Paul Mills another recruiting win in his hometown. Mills, a Houston native, has already brought Houston-area players Zion Pipkin, Justin Hill and Tyrus Rathan-Mayes to Wichita State during his tenure.

Miles put together a breakout junior season at Clear Lake, averaging 27.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists across 35 games. He shot 50% from the field, 37% from 3-point range and 86% at the free-throw line.

His single-game high set a Clear Lake school record. He scored 47 points in a 66-63 win over Deer Park.

247Sports rates Miles as the No. 143 overall prospect in the 2027 class and a four-star recruit. ESPN and Rivals rate him as a three-star prospect. The Rivals Industry Ranking lists him at No. 158 nationally, No. 8 among combo guards and No. 13 among Texas prospects.

@tobias_bass: "Love the fit. Can really score the ball at all 3 levels."

Tobias Bass, a recruiting analyst covering the commitment for The Athletic, posted that assessment on X on Monday.

Mills signed a three-year contract extension on July 30 that runs through June 30, 2031, after guiding the Shockers from 15 wins in his first season to 24 in 2025-26. When the extension was announced, Mills told KSN he was confident the program's next chapters would include championship celebrations.

The Shockers remain involved in the recruitment of Reese Alston, a five-star 2027 prospect and fellow Houston native who has already visited Wichita. No commitment or timeline has been announced for Alston.
