A teenager suspected of shooting two people near Wichita's WaterWalk district in August 2025 was arrested in Eagle Pass, Texas, more than a year after the attack.
The Maverick County Sheriff's Office took the 17-year-old into custody on Aug. 31 on felony warrants out of Sedgwick County, the Wichita Police Department confirmed. WPD spokesman Bradley Wright said the suspect faces allegations of two counts of attempted murder, criminal discharge of a weapon, aggravated battery and criminal threat, the Wichita Eagle reported.
The warrants stem from an Aug. 24, 2025, shooting in downtown Wichita. The suspect's 16-year-old ex-girlfriend and a 17-year-old boy were inside a vehicle near the WaterWalk area when the suspect allegedly opened fire on them, according to WPD. Both teens were hospitalized and survived.
The girl was struck in the foot and suffered injuries police described as minor. The boy was shot multiple times and hospitalized in critical condition, though police said he was expected to survive, according to a KANT News report. After the shooting, the two victims traveled to a QuikTrip near Douglas and Seneca, where emergency crews responded.
WPD labeled the suspect armed and dangerous and circulated his photograph in an attempt-to-locate alert on Aug. 25, 2025, KAKE reported. The department circulated the photo again in November 2025. Authorities were still asking the public for help locating him as recently as June 2026, according to KANT News.
The suspect was apprehended while crossing from Piedras Negras, Mexico, into Eagle Pass at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 1, according to KANT News citing local Texas sources. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the active Sedgwick County warrants during the inspection process. He was turned over to Maverick County authorities and held at the Tom Bowles Detention Center.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in a statement:
"Whenever acts of violence happen in Wichita, we are committed to pursuing accountability," Sullivan said. "This arrest helps the victims and their families move one step closer to ensuring the suspect is held accountable for his actions."
The suspect was 16 at the time of the shooting. Authorities said arrangements are being made to transport him back to Kansas to face the allegations. No formal charges, court date or extradition timeline have been publicly announced.
