Drivers who use westbound Kellogg Avenue through the Interstate 135 interchange will need to find another route Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will shut down westbound Kellogg at I-135 from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, according to KSN-TV, citing KDOT. Traffic will be diverted to northbound and southbound I-135 during the closure.

The overnight work is part of the I-135/U.S. 54 interchange bridge construction project, a multiyear effort that includes replacing and redecking bridges at the interchange where I-135 meets U.S. 54, also known as Kellogg Avenue.

What's being built

Crews are constructing a new ramp from southbound I-135 to eastbound Kellogg while redecking the bridge that carries traffic from northbound I-135 to westbound Kellogg. The ramp from northbound I-135 to westbound U.S. 54 has been closed since Jan. 5.

Inside lanes on I-135 between Lincoln Street and Douglas Avenue remain closed in both directions for the duration of the project. Lanes on U.S. 54 between Hillside and Topeka are also closed, according to KDOT's Wichita Metro Updates page.

KDOT expects work to continue through September 2027. A City of Wichita construction bulletin listed an estimated completion of early 2027, though KDOT's own timeline extends further.

Recent disruptions

The Tuesday night closure follows a weekend shutdown earlier in September. On Sept. 12 and Sept. 13, KDOT closed a portion of northbound I-135 from the Lincoln Street exit to the Kellogg interchange so crews could set bridge girders and install false floors.
