Mulvane quarterback Grady Myers flicked an improvised 2-point conversion pass to Hays Ensley with 1:05 left Friday, Sept. 25, stunning No. 4 Wamego 41-40. The No. 10 Wildcats won on the road with Myers limping on an injured leg, as first reported by the Wichita Eagle's Taylor Eldridge.

The win snapped Wamego's regular-season home winning streak, which dated to Sept. 3, 2021. It moved Mulvane to 3-1 and handed the unbeaten Red Raiders their first loss in only the second-ever meeting between the two Class 4A programs.

Ensley was the engine all night. He carried 30 times for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Myers added 188 rushing yards and two scores before a sideline tackle with 5:44 remaining left him grabbing his leg on the ground.

Backup Jeter Tatum replaced Myers for two snaps. Myers hobbled back onto the field for the final drive anyway.

"We had come all that way," Myers said after the game. "I just wanted to finish the job."

Mulvane trailed 40-27 after Wamego scored to open the third quarter. The teams had combined for nine touchdowns in a wild first half, with Wamego building a 32-20 lead before Ensley's 12-yard scoring run just before halftime trimmed the gap to 32-27.

Two missed PAT kicks kept Mulvane from pulling even. Ensley's 1-yard plunge in the third quarter made it 40-33, but the Wildcats still needed a stop.

They got one. Wamego quarterback Logan Fulton kept the ball on a fourth-and-1 draw inside the Mulvane 25. The chains came out. He was short.

With 1:13 left, Ensley swept right on fourth-and-1 from the Wamego 6. Tatum, who had shifted from quarterback to wide receiver, threw the key block. Ensley turned the corner and scored to make it 40-39.

Head coach Daniel Myears held up two fingers. No overtime.

Myears said there was no doubt about going for two. He said every player on the field would have made the same call.

Myers returned for the conversion snap despite his injury. The designed play targeted the right side of the end zone, but Wamego dropped into zone coverage. Myers spotted Ensley alone on the left side. Ensley had been assigned to block, not run a route.

Myers threw it anyway.

"And then I prayed," Myers said.

Ensley caught it. Mulvane led 41-40.

Wamego still had time. Fulton drove the Red Raiders forward, but Ensley intercepted a Fulton pass with 33 seconds left, according to Sports in Kansas, to seal the upset.

Through four games, Ensley has carried 97 times for 811 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was a slot receiver in 2025 before Mulvane moved him to running back this season.

Wamego had reached at least the state quarterfinals every season since 2020 and went 9-3 with a semifinal appearance in 2025, according the Wichita Eagle. After the loss, KAKE's post-game rankings dropped Wamego to No. 9 in Class 4A and bumped Mulvane up to No. 8.

Mulvane hosts Wellington at 7 p.m. Friday. Wamego fell to 3-1.
