Griffin Cornejo, 50, pleaded guilty Tuesday, Oct. 6, to two counts of criminal threat for threatening to kill Wichita Mayor Lily Wu.
Cornejo faces five to 17 months in prison on each count, depending on his criminal history, Judge Kevin M. Smith said, as reported by KAKE News. Sentencing is set for Thursday, Dec. 17.
The case dates to March 23, when a Comcare employee reported at approximately 10 a.m. that a client on the agency's crisis line was threatening to kill the mayor "with his bare hands," according to the Wichita Police Department. An arrest record shows the threat was made from the QuikTrip at 31st and Seneca in southwest Wichita.
Cornejo was arrested at 1021 West 31st Street South and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail just before 8 p.m. that evening, according to the Salina Post, which cited jail records at the time. Court documents cited by the Salina Post indicate Cornejo made the threat over a delay in his SNAP benefits.
Under the plea agreement, Cornejo must live with a family member unless he is in a treatment facility, Oxford House or another living situation approved by his probation officer. He must undergo substance-abuse and mental-health assessments, comply with treatment recommendations, take prescribed medication as directed and consume no alcohol or non-prescribed drugs. Cornejo is also required to sign releases allowing monitoring of his treatment and to begin the Oxford House interview process within 30 days of his release from custody.
The agreement bars Cornejo from any contact with Wu.
Wu previously told KAKE News she has received previous threats but said this one rose to the level of a criminal threat. She said she trusts investigators to handle the case.
Cornejo has a hearing scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, at which prosecutors are expected to recommend he be released on bond. His sentencing remains on the Dec. 17 calendar before Judge Smith.
