A Wichita man faces prison after pleading guilty to killing a Navy veteran who was crossing the street in a wheelchair.
Jaime Gonzalez-Arambula, 36, entered his guilty plea in September on felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence in the May 9 death of Lawrence A. Grover, 63, the Wichita Eagle reported on Thursday, Oct. 8. Gonzalez-Arambula's sentencing is set for Friday, Nov. 20.
Attorneys on both sides plan to recommend a prison sentence rather than probation, according to the plea agreement.
Grover was using his wheelchair in the 2700 block of North Amidon around 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, when Gonzalez-Arambula struck him with a truck. Grover was taken by EMS to a local hospital, where he died, according to the Wichita Police Department.
A probable cause affidavit details the moments before the crash. The event data recorder from Gonzalez-Arambula's truck showed him traveling 50 mph in a 40 mph zone two seconds before impact. Gonzalez-Arambula told police he saw Grover in the wheelchair before the collision but thought Grover was "going to stop."
Police noted visible signs of intoxication, including a droopy face, bloodshot eyes and slurred or delayed speech, according to the affidavit. Gonzalez-Arambula admitted to officers that he had been drinking before the crash.
A breath test administered almost two hours after the collision showed an alcohol concentration of .263, according to the affidavit.
Gonzalez-Arambula remained at the scene and was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on $500,000 bond, according to the Wichita Eagle's May 11 report.
The Wichita Eagle reported that, given his criminal history, Gonzalez-Arambula is likely to receive around three years on the manslaughter charge and more than a year for the DUI.
According to his obituary, Grover served in the Navy, including in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. His obituary also described a life shaped by hard work, responsibility and a strong sense of duty.
