A vehicle struck a child Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, in a crosswalk inside a school zone near Derby Hills Elementary in Derby, the Derby Fire Department said.

The child's injuries do not appear to be severe or life-threatening, the department said in a media release. The school is located at 2230 N. Woodlawn.

KWCH first reported the fire department's statement. The Wichita Eagle identified the child as a 5-year-old in its headline, though the age could not be independently confirmed from other available sources. KAKE News reported the child was walking to school at the time of the collision.

No details have been released about the driver or the circumstances of the collision. The Derby Fire Department did not specify an exact time beyond Tuesday morning. The Derby Police Department has not publicly commented on whether any citations were issued.

The fire department urged drivers near schools to anticipate children walking, riding bikes and crossing the street. The department called on motorists to slow down, put away their phones and watch every crosswalk. It also asked for extra patience around buses, crossing guards, parents and other pedestrians.

The collision comes about six weeks after Derby Police Chief Brandon Russell issued a back-to-school safety message in The Derby Informer. Russell wrote on Aug. 5 that officers would increase their presence around campuses, with additional patrols in school zones targeting speeding and distracted driving.

"Slowing down, eliminating distractions, and watching for children at crosswalks can prevent serious accidents and save lives," Russell wrote at the time.

The department had not announced whether those additional patrols were active near Derby Hills Elementary on Tuesday morning.
