Sedgwick County's suicide rate fell to its lowest point in 10 years in 2025, according to COMCARE, the county's behavioral health provider.

Ninety people died by suicide in the county in 2025, down from 92 in 2024, as reported by KAKE News Tuesday, Sept. 22. The county's suicide rate has dropped 17% since 2022, according to COMCARE.

COMCARE pointed to two factors that may be driving the decline. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline launched in 2022, giving people in crisis 24-hour access to trained professionals by phone or text. COMCARE also became a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), which expanded walk-in mental health services so residents can get care faster.

The progress comes with caveats.

Sedgwick County's rate of about 17 deaths per 100,000 residents still exceeds the national average, according to COMCARE. Men accounted for roughly 77% of the county's suicide deaths in 2025.

Calvert said the county's military presence, including McConnell Air Force Base, and its large aircraft industry may contribute to the elevated rate, noting that veterans and aircraft-industry workers account for some of the county's higher suicide numbers. COMCARE and the coalition urged residents to watch for warning signs: withdrawal from others, expressions of hopelessness and changes in behavior.

Calvert encouraged people to ask directly if someone is struggling.

"Are you thinking about suicide? I know it's scary, but to be direct like that can really save a life," Calvert said.
