A Haysville man already wearing a state ankle monitor was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for trafficking methamphetamine.
Dakota Dale McDaniel, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute meth, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas. The office announced the 168-month sentence on Sept. 11.
The case started Sept. 23, 2025, when a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper tried to stop McDaniel near Hemlock Avenue and Hemlock Place in south Wichita. McDaniel refused to yield to lights and sirens and kept driving his motorcycle, according to court documents cited in the federal announcement.
Before losing sight of him, the trooper noticed McDaniel was wearing a black backpack. Law enforcement found McDaniel a short time later. The motorcycle and the backpack were on the ground.
Inside the backpack, a trooper found 240.23 grams of 98.2 percent pure methamphetamine, a little more than half a pound. The bag also held a digital scale, multiple small zip-lock style bags, a spoon and a firearm. The charger for McDaniel's Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) ankle monitor was in the backpack too.
McDaniel had prior convictions for second-degree murder, drug possession with intent to distribute, and identity fraud and theft, according to KDOC records cited by the Wichita Eagle. He was originally charged with two weapons crimes alongside the drug count. The weapons charges were dropped as part of his guilty plea.
No response from McDaniel's defense attorney appears in the public record as of the Sept. 11 announcement.
U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser called McDaniel a career criminal in the announcement and praised the multi-agency effort behind the case.
Five agencies investigated: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and the Butler County Sheriff's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kari Burks prosecuted.
Residents can report drug activity to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office or the Wichita Police Department.
