Derby's $18 million Decarsky Park expansion opens Oct. 15, adding athletic fields, a playground, picnic areas and a two-level concession building.

The grand opening at 1600 Line Dr. coincides with Derby's monthly Third Thursday community event, which will feature a Dog Costume Contest and Trunk or Treat at the park, according to the city's newsletter. The Derby Informer reported Sept. 13 that city staff are finalizing operational agreements ahead of the opening.

Phase 2 will add four or five athletic fields and increase the park's programming capacity, according to a Derby Informer report on the Derby Recreation Commission's Aug. 25 budget hearing. The city's August newsletter said construction was expected to wrap up in August, with the public opening following about six weeks later.

The new concession building cleared a key hurdle when it passed its final fire inspection July 29, conducted by Fire Marshal Marr, according to Derby City Council minutes from Aug. 11. At that same meeting, the council issued a Cereal Malt Beverage license for the park, clearing the way for beer sales at the concession building.

Background checks for concession managers had been reviewed and approved by the police chief in May. The vendor selected for concession services has not been publicly announced.

The Derby Recreation Commission, led by Superintendent Chris Drum, approved its 2026-27 budget Aug. 25. That budget includes capital improvement preparations for the Phase 2 opening.

"I like to call this alignment of goals with our government partners," Drum said at the Aug. 25 budget hearing, as reported by the Derby Informer. "If we can align our goals with our tri-governmental partners, [we can] provide the best services for our community with everyone in mind."

Eric Newell serves as Derby's parks director. He succeeded Steve White, who retired while overseeing the Phase 2 construction, described in the city's announcement as an $18 million project.
