60-year-old Juanita Garduno is dead and a 6-year-old was in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash at 17th and Market streets in north Wichita on Sunday, Sept. 20.

The crash happened at 8:28 a.m. in the 1700 block of Market Street, according to the Wichita Police Department. A black Cadillac traveling north on Market collided with a blue Jeep heading west on 17th Street, KWCH reported.

The collision sent the Jeep rolling across Broadway. It came to a stop in the 300 block of 17th Street.

Four people were inside the Jeep. The driver and front-seat passenger stayed in the vehicle and were in stable condition. Officers said both were able to speak with investigators at the scene.

The two rear passengers, the 6-year-old and Garduno, were ejected at the intersection of 17th and Market. Both were rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

The Cadillac's driver was still inside that vehicle after the crash. All five people involved were taken to the hospital, according to KWCH.

Police announced Garduno's death in a 7:30 p.m. update Sunday. The department did not provide an update on the 6-year-old's condition at that time. No further update on the child had been released as of Monday.

Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford said officers suspect the Cadillac's driver may have been impaired, according to the Wichita Eagle. Ford said the cause of the collision is still under investigation.

No charges had been announced as of Sunday evening. The identity of the Cadillac's driver has not been released.

The intersection of Market and 17th was closed while investigators worked the scene, according to the Eagle. KSN and KAKE also confirmed the details of the crash.

The investigation remains open.
