Someone fired shots from a vehicle about a block from East High School on Aug. 31, prompting a lockout and a police response on a residential street.

No one was injured.

Multiple children were involved, and the incident may have stemmed from an argument, the Wichita Police Department said, according to KSN. Police said the shots were fired into the air.

Sedgwick County dispatch logged the first report shortly before 2 p.m. near Grove and Waterman streets. The Wichita Police Department said in a community alert on X that it had received multiple reports of shots fired from a vehicle in the 2500 block of E. Waterman.

East High was placed on lockout as a precaution while officers swept the area. A Wichita Public Schools spokesperson told KWCH the lockout lasted about 20 minutes and was "due to police activity in the neighborhood." Normal after-school activities resumed on schedule.

Andrew Ford, public information officer for the Wichita Police Department, told KAKE that the lockout was lifted once officers "determined there was no immediate or ongoing threat in the area, based on their presence and the information available at the time."

Ford said investigators were continuing to speak with witnesses, including a 17-year-old identified as a victim, to determine what led to the incident. Police said they had also interviewed witnesses at the scene shortly after the shooting.

Officers asked people to avoid Waterman between Poplar and Green streets while the investigation continued. The neighborhood remained under a police perimeter as of Monday afternoon.

The lockout was the second at East High in three days. On Aug. 28, the school went on lockout after a 16-year-old boy allegedly armed with a knife approached a group of students near the campus, KAKE reported. That suspect was taken into custody in the school parking lot.
