Wichita-area high school football fans heading to Friday night's season openers will wait an extra 30 minutes for kickoff.

Multiple games across the region have been moved from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as daily highs continue to top 100 degrees. The delays affect at least four City League matchups: Emporia at Wichita North (hosted at Northwest), Garden City at Wichita Heights, Wichita East at Wichita South and Wichita Northwest at Bishop Carroll, according to the Wichita Eagle.

Catch It Kansas reported additional 7:30 p.m. starts for Andover at Maize, Augusta at McPherson, Circle at Pratt, Salina South at Salina Central, Ark City vs. Winfield, El Dorado vs. Wichita Collegiate, Scott City vs. Great Bend and Abilene vs. Concordia. The list was still being updated as of Wednesday. Some schools planned to make final decisions Friday morning.

That half-hour matters beyond kickoff temperature. Football teams begin pregame warmups nearly two hours before the opening whistle, meaning a 7 p.m. start would put players outside during the hottest part of the evening, the Wichita Eagle reported.

Kansas had logged 39 consecutive days above 90 degrees as of Aug. 31, KAKE reported. A National Weather Service Heat Advisory was in effect through Saturday evening, Sept. 5, with heat index values expected to reach 106, according to KAKE.

Wichita Public Schools confirmed all district varsity football games would start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, KMUW reported. The district follows Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) guidelines, which use wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) readings to determine when outdoor activity must be limited or stopped.

Under KSHSAA's recommended policy, delays and equipment restrictions begin at 87.8 degrees WBGT. All outdoor activity stops at 89.8 degrees, according to the Wichita Eagle.

Chris Asmussen, Wichita Public Schools' director of athletics, told KWCH that the district monitors five wet-bulb zones. "When it's really super hot, we get that (code) black, which is no one goes outside to practice," Asmussen said.

As we reported Wednesday, area coaches have shifted practices to early morning for a third straight week. Wichita Northwest coach Steve Martin has held every preseason practice at 5 a.m., skipping afternoon sessions entirely, the Wichita Eagle reported.

Bishop Carroll athletic director Tyler Fraizer called the stretch "uncharted territory" in a Wednesday interview with the Wichita Eagle. "Whatever the reading says, that's what we're going to do," Fraizer said.

KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Jeremy Holaday told KAKE that the association provides resources and best practices but leaves scheduling decisions to local schools. Forecasts call for highs above 100 degrees through the middle of next week. Week 2 schedules may face similar changes.
