Anonymous callers phoned in threats to schools in Goddard and Andover on Sept. 1, triggering lockdowns at multiple campuses before law enforcement determined neither threat was credible.

The first call came to Goddard High School's front office at about 8:38 a.m., reporting a bomb, KWCH reported. Four Goddard schools went into lockdown: Goddard High School, Amelia Earhart Elementary School, Goddard Middle School and Goddard Academy. Students were held in classrooms and exterior doors were locked while USD 265 Police and local law enforcement searched the buildings and surrounding areas.

No devices were found.

Investigators completed a full search of Goddard High School, and the district cleared all four schools to resume normal activities.

About 20 minutes later, Andover High School received a separate threatening call at approximately 9 a.m. That call named specific students. Andover Police and school administrators performed multiple sweeps of the building, checked the names mentioned and concluded there was no actual threat to students or staff, the Andover school district said in a message to parents.

The Andover district also noted that other area school districts received similar calls the same morning. Neither district has publicly identified which additional districts were affected, and no information about a suspect or criminal investigation has been released.

The lockdowns came less than a month after Goddard USD 265 rolled out new security measures for the 2026-27 school year. The district added a visitor-management system requiring photo ID or prior registration and background checks via Raptor Technologies software for all adults entering school buildings, according to the Wichita Eagle. USD 265 Police Chief Joe Camp said in an Aug. 6 Wichita Eagle report that the department "We continuously evaluate how we can enhance the safety and security of our students …"

No follow-up press conferences or investigation updates had been announced as of Tuesday. Residents who see suspicious activity near schools can contact the Andover Police Department or USD 265 Police.
