State inspectors found a dead mouse, cockroaches and approximately 30 flies landing on kitchen surfaces at separate Wichita restaurants during the week of Aug. 9 through Aug. 15, according to Kansas Department of Agriculture inspection records compiled by the Wichita Eagle's Amy Renee Leiker.

Seven Sedgwick County food establishments failed state inspections that week. More than 80 other locations passed.

The most severe findings came at Chiang Mai Thai Restaurant, 3141 S. Hillside, where inspectors conducting a follow-up to a prior administrative order on Aug. 12, documented a dead mouse, mouse feces on kitchen and server alley floors, cockroaches and grease buildup. Inspectors noted general cleanliness had not improved since the restaurant's last inspection. No reinspection date was listed.

Gera's Street Tacos, a food truck inspected Aug. 15, at 1455 N. Broadway, racked up seven violations, the most of any location that week. A fly landed on a tortilla, flies were found in the kitchen landing on food, the truck had no water supply, items were stored in the hand-washing sink, and windows and the door had no screens. Reinspection is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Super East Buffet, 7607 E. Douglas, drew three violations Aug. 12 during a complaint-triggered inspection. Approximately 30 flies were in the kitchen landing on preparation surfaces and dishes, fly strips hung over food prep tables, fried shrimp and egg rolls were not kept hot enough, and trash and standing water outside the building were attracting flies. Reinspection was scheduled for Aug. 22.

Emerson Biggins Sports Bar & Grill, 2330 N. Maize Road, received five violations Aug. 12 after a customer complaint. Beans were not kept cold enough, old cream cheese and hot dogs were found, and blanched fries lacked time labels. Reinspection was scheduled for Aug. 22.

Wichita Country Club Poolside Cafe, 8501 E. 13th St., had six violations found Aug. 13 during a routine check. Expired half-and-half and old garbanzo beans were in storage, the high-temperature dishwasher did not reach proper heat, and dirty plates sat in clean storage.

The Coop Chicken Fingers, 1140 S. Rock Road, failed its first operational inspection after licensing on Aug. 10. An employee did not wash hands before starting a kitchen shift, another touched his face then handled chicken, and spray bottles of cleaner were not labeled. Reinspection was scheduled for Aug. 20.

Dillons, 8828 W. 13th St., had one violation Aug. 14: dozens of flies in the deli, bakery and other areas. Reinspection is scheduled for Aug. 24.

Locations that fail are usually reinspected within 10 days, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Temporary closures are rare but possible.

The prior inspection week, Aug. 2–8, produced 11 non-compliant establishments in Sedgwick County.
