A 24-year-old woman was shot and killed at a west Wichita apartment Wednesday, Oct. 7. Police are searching for Xavion Dates, whom they identified as a person of interest.
Wichita police responded to a shooting in the 300 block of South Tyler at 6:18 p.m., where officers found the woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body, police spokesman Andrew Ford said, according to the Wichita Eagle. Officers and paramedics treated her at the scene, but she was pronounced dead.
Police named Xavion Dates a person of interest in the homicide investigation and said he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Ford said police believe the shooting was domestic-violence related. The victim's sister was the person who called 911.
After the shooting, Dates allegedly fled the apartment and carjacked a white Toyota RAV4 in the 300 block of South Turquoise, a nearby street. The driver of the Toyota was not injured in the carjacking, Ford said.
Police later recovered the stolen vehicle in the 500 block of North Rock, several miles east on the other side of the city. Dates was not with the vehicle when officers found it.
Ford described Dates as a Black man last seen wearing a McDonald's uniform and black pants.
Anyone who sees Dates should call 911 immediately and not approach him.
The Wichita Police Department posted on X asking the public to help locate Dates, saying investigators need to speak with him in connection with the homicide.
"It's unfortunate. Given that it's Domestic Violence Awareness month, we want to tell people that there is help out there … because nobody should have to take part in a domestic violence relationship," Ford said.
The victim's name has not been released. Police have not said whether Dates has been formally charged.
