Billy Idol will headline a Sept. 21 concert at Wichita's Orpheum Theatre, the fourth major act announced for the downtown venue's grand reopening after a 13-month, $10.5 million restoration.

Idol takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. with doors at 6:30 p.m., according to KSN. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Aug. 21.

The punk-rock-turned-1980s hitmaker, known for "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell" and "Dancing With Myself," joins a reopening concert series that already includes EGOT winner John Legend, multiplatinum country trio Lady A and indie folk rockers the Revivalists. Legend's Aug. 30 show marks the official grand reopening night.

The lineup caps a 13-month closure that transformed the 1,286-seat, National Register-listed theater at 200 N. Broadway. The renovation added new flooring and seating throughout, restored the venue's signature night-sky lights, updated HVAC and installed state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, according to KMUW's July 27 reporting.

The capital campaign behind the project raised $13 million total. Beyond the $10.5 million renovation cost, the remaining $2.5 million will fund an endowment for the nonprofit theater's long-term operations.

Executive director Stacee Olden told KMUW on July 27 that walking into the restored space felt like a daily surprise. "With every new feature that was put in place in the theater, as we had planned, it just brought the theater back to life in full color, which we haven't had before," Olden said. "So every day I've walked in, I feel like it's Christmas."

When renovation crews unearthed dirt beneath the Orpheum's 103-year-old floors, Olden saved a sample in a jar for the theater's library.

The Orpheum first opened Sept. 4, 1922, designed by theater architect John Eberson in an atmospheric style inspired by Andalusian gardens. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The venue announced its Second Century Campaign on Sept. 4, 2024, and construction began in June 2025.

Beyond concerts, the Orpheum will offer guided tours of the completed renovations on Sept. 4. Tour tickets are available on the venue's website. A new exterior mural depicting the theater's history is also planned as part of the reopening celebrations, with three finalist artists competing for the commission.
