A Wichita teen who shot two teens in the parking lot of Towne East Square will spend more than seven years in prison.

Sedgwick County Judge Christopher Magana sentenced Nathaniel Robledo to 86 months on Sept. 8 for wounding a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old outside the mall in August 2025. Robledo will also serve three years of post-release supervision, the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office said, according to KAKE.

Robledo, now 18, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated battery. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of criminal use of a weapon, KSN reported.

He was 17 at the time of the shooting and was originally charged as a juvenile. A judge ruled in February that he could be tried as an adult.

The shooting happened on Aug. 8, 2025, in the mall's parking lot near Round1 Bowling, according to a Wichita Police Department press release issued at the time. A fight involving Robledo and two other teens broke out with two brothers. Bystanders separated the groups, and they walked off in different directions.

The dispute appeared to be over. Then Robledo pulled a firearm from his backpack and opened fire.

He struck the 15-year-old in his right leg first, then shot the 17-year-old brother in the thumb and thigh, according to an affidavit cited by the Wichita Eagle. Both victims were hospitalized in critical but stable condition, the police press release said.

Off-duty Great Bend police officer Paul Millard was shopping at Scheels with his wife when he heard the gunfire. He ran toward the shooting, drew his own weapon and disarmed Robledo. Wichita officers arrived moments later and made the arrest. Millard was later honored with the Wichita Police Department's Bronze Wreath of Valor, according to KSN.

Sedgwick County prosecutor Mandee Schauf addressed the plea agreement at the sentencing hearing.

"The State believes that the agreement that was reached strikes that balance, holds the defendant accountable for what he did … We're very lucky that neither one of those two have died as a result," Schauf said, according to the Eagle.

No statement from Robledo's defense attorney appeared in court records reviewed by the reporting outlets.

When the shooting first occurred, Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan called it "the result of poor decision-making by these teens" and credited the off-duty officer's actions with helping prevent further tragedy, in an Aug. 9, 2025, department statement.
