An 18-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly crashed a silver Acura into a West Wichita home on Sept. 6, leaving a 17-year-old passenger in critical condition.

The Wichita Police Department said officers responded to the 400 block of North Seneca Street, near West 2nd Street, at about 7:28 a.m., KWCH reported. The car had left the road and struck a home.

It rolled onto its roof.

The vehicle came to rest against the house in a position that forced officers to enter the residence to reach the car and its two occupants, according to KSN. Both the 18-year-old driver and the 17-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The driver was later treated and released. After leaving the hospital, he was arrested. KWCH, citing Wichita police, reported the charge as aggravated battery DUI along with other traffic-related offenses. KSN, also citing the department, described the arrest as being on suspicion of aggravated battery and reckless driving.

The exact charges could not be independently confirmed through the two reports, and it was not clear whether formal charges had been filed in Sedgwick County court as of Sept. 8.

The department's preliminary investigation points to alcohol and speed as contributing factors in the crash, according to both outlets citing Wichita police.

Neither outlet named the driver or the passenger. The driver has not been formally charged in public records available at the time of the reports, and the passenger is a minor.

No update on the 17-year-old passenger's condition has been reported since the day of the crash. The events leading up to the collision remain under investigation, according to Wichita police.
