No. 4 Derby hosts Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Panther Stadium in the Panthers' first home game since October 2025.

The Panthers opened the 2026 season on the road Sept. 4 with a dominant 45-21 win over Eisenhower, building a 42-7 halftime lead, the Derby Informer reported. Quarterback Blade Clark threw three touchdown passes, connecting twice with Michael Castillo and once with Cameron Newton Jr.

Da'Von Morrison, a senior who moved from wide receiver to fill in for absent starting running back Arieus Finley, rushed for three touchdowns of his own. Finley, a University of South Dakota commit who rushed for 1,590 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior, did not play against Eisenhower. No reason for his absence has been made public.

Head coach Brandon Clark said after the Sept. 4 opener that Morrison knew the playbook, protected the passer and ran the ball hard. Looking ahead to Friday, the coach told the Derby Informer the Panthers still need to sharpen the details before they can sustain their intensity for a full four quarters.

Derby enters ranked No. 4 in Class 6A in both the Wichita Eagle's Week 2 poll and KAKE's Friday Football Blitz rankings.

A new-look Hutchinson offense

The Salthawks arrive at 0-1 after a 32-21 loss to Andover but with a different identity. First-year head coach Luke Berblinger has scrapped the flexbone in favor of a spread offense, according to the Derby Informer's fall sports guide.

Quarterback Davin Morgan showed mobility in Week 1, and senior wide receiver Lamar Govain hauled in three touchdown catches against Andover. Govain stands 6-foot-3 and gives the Salthawks a big target on the outside.

Hutchinson went 7-3 in 2025 before a 27-6 regional loss to Hays. The Salthawks have not beaten Derby since 2014. Over the past five seasons, the Panthers have won by an average margin of more than 25 points.

Friday's game marks the first AVCTL-I (Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I) contest of 2026 for both teams.

Military Appreciation Night

The home opener doubles as Derby's annual Military Appreciation Night. The game will feature special uniforms, pregame presentations and a performance by the Derby High School Marching Band. Active-duty military members and Guard and Reserve members with a military ID will receive a complimentary ticket courtesy of the Derby Chamber of Commerce.

"Hopefully everyone shows up and that place is packed," Brandon Clark said. "Everyone talks about how this defense is unknown and young, but this is one of the better defenses we have had in a while. They fly around; they are physical."

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday at Panther Stadium.
